Biography

Dr. Roger Kaldawy is one of Massachusetts most prominent eye physicians and surgeons and one of the area’s full-time specialists in corneal diseases. He is the CEO of Milford Franklin Eye Center. He is also the Medical Director of the Cataract and Laser Surgery Center of Milford.

Dr. Kaldawy completed his training in Ophthalmology at the University of Rochester and his fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the prestigious Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Iowa. This program has consistently ranked among the top 10 in the nation according to the U.S. News & World Report rankings of Best Hospitals for Ophthalmology. Dr. Kaldawy is also one of the rare ophthalmologists in America to have undergone double training in both Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology.

Upon completion of his training, Dr. Kaldawy served as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Boston University, where he was the Director of the Cornea and External Disease program and trained fellows and residents in Ophthalmology. Some of his trainees are now in academic and private practices in Massachusetts and around the world. Dr. Kaldawy has published research articles in peer-reviewed academic journals. One of his groundbreaking research papers on apoptosis and keratoconus has been cited in over 131 PubMed Central articles and translated into many languages around the world. Dr. Kaldawy has been invited as a guest speaker to many prestigious academic programs in the U.S. and abroad, including the University of New York, Stanford University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Kaldawy was the first surgeon in central Massachusetts to perform DSAEK corneal transplantation. With a special interest in cataract surgery, Dr. Kaldawy has performed tens of thousands of procedures and was the first surgeon in the area to offer highly advanced accommodating implants. He was also the first surgeon in the area to offer bladeless laser-assisted Femto cataract surgery. This laser procedure is still offered locally at the Milford Cataract and Laser Surgery Center.

Dr. Kaldawy has hosted many ophthalmologists seeking to advance their skills in cataract surgery, including local ophthalmologists and academic groups from Yale University. He has designed tools used in cataract surgery. He has also been featured on Channel 5 TV in Boston for being among the first surgeons in New England to implant the new glaucoma device, the iDose TR.

Dr. Kaldawy is proud to have grown Milford Franklin Eye Center into a regional ophthalmology referral center of excellence in eye care, with ophthalmologists, optometrists, and over 58 staff members. This is one of the few centers in Massachusetts to own and operate its own outpatient ambulatory surgery center.

Dr. Kaldawy has been part of multiple prestigious medical societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Internal Medicine, the American Medical Association, the Academy of Medicine of Richmond, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the National Keratoconus Foundation. He has also contributed to textbooks that residents in Ophthalmology review to prepare for their Board exams.

Dr. Kaldawy holds admitting privileges at the Milford Regional Medical Center and the Cataract and Laser Surgery Center of Milford, where he serves as Medical Director.

Dr. Kaldawy is fluent in three languages and enjoys hiking, biking, classical music, and opera. He is particularly proud of his outreach program, “Vision Without Borders,” which he started with his daughter, Nataly Kaldawy. The program has provided free eye care to refugees of wars in countries around the world.
